Serendipity Sugaring Studio specializes in the biodegradable hair removal method of sugaring. This method produces little waste, unlike other techniques, such as waxing, which utilizes hardened plastic strips. Sugaring is a gentle, effective, and environmentally conscious option.
Serendipity incorporates sustainability into our core business operations through internal and external efforts. We shall adopt the following policies and practices:
1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
2. Purchase environmentally preferable products.
3. Conserve energy, water, and natural resources.
4. Practice green business policies outlined by the San Francisco Department of the Environment.
5. Compost waste whenever possible.
Education
We educate ourselves on resource conservation and pollution prevention through:
• Training programs to learn proper recycling, composting practices, resource conservation ideas, the importance of low-toxic purchasing, and researching retail products that align with our values.
• Informing ourselves about environmental resources by utilizing the Green Resource Guide.
• Using clear signage for compost, recycling, landfill, water conservation, and energy
conservation.
• We prioritize educating clientele on the environmental benefits of sugaring versus waxing.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
We reduce our footprint by:
• Reducing waste by buying in bulk and eliminating disposable
products as much as possible.
• Reusing equipment such as furniture and donating usable items to charity.
• Striving for 90% waste diversion by recycling all resources such as paper, plastics, cardboard, glass, and aluminum AND composting all food and plant discards.
• Sourcing products locally whenever possible.
Toxics Reduction
We reduce the use of toxic materials to protect our health and the environment.
Specifically we:
• Only purchase low toxic janitorial cleaning products certified Green Seal, UL/Ecologo, Safer Choice, and that meet criterion on www.sfapproved.org.
• Avoid purchasing toxic substances and aerosol cans.
• Utilize hydrogen peroxide to disinfect when necessary.
• Lighting – utilize LEDs, T8 or T5 low mercury fluorescent lamps.
• Implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for controlling pests.
• Dispose of hazardous materials safely.
• Encourage others to do the same.
Green Purchasing
We purchase/use:
• Paper, business cards, etc. with a minimum of 50%
postconsumer waste (PCW) recycled content.
• Janitorial paper with post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled content (toilet paper and facial tissues minimum 20% PCW, paper towels minimum 40% PCW).
• Chlorine-free paper products.
• Promotional materials with vegetable or low-VOC inks.
• Energy Star-rated refrigerators, appliances, and office equipment.
• The most water-efficient toilets and faucet aerators.
• Verify vendor ethics and practices.
Resource Conservation
We conserve fossil fuels and other resources by:
• Investing in carbon offset projects to mitigate and sequester carbon.
• Promoting the use of public transit and commuter alternatives.
• Participating in the Emergency Ride Home program.
• Using energy-conserving software programs and unplugging equipment.
• Reusing and refusing packaging materials.
• Emphasizing repurposing of items instead of purchasing new items.
• Limiting energy use to necessity.
Serendipity Sugaring Studio commits to this environmental policy statement for the duration of our Green Business recognition.
We promise to uphold this policy to the best of our ability and pledge to train our employees, contractors, janitorial staff, and building management to maintain our commitment to this policy.
